On 17 November 2025, EuChemS took part in the workshop on the latest advancements in PFASs risk assessment, held in Parma, Italy, and online. The event brought together experts from EFSA, WHO, EU agencies, Member States, the European Commission, and the PARC initiative to discuss recent scientific developments related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs).
PFASs, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are synthetic compounds used for their water-, grease-, and stain-resistant properties in products such as non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foams. Their persistence in the environment raises concerns about long-term impacts on human health and ecosystems.
The workshop aimed to share knowledge on PFASs risk assessment and foster collaboration among stakeholders. Participants exchanged insights on monitoring, data collection, and scientific approaches to better understand PFAS exposure and potential health risks. Open microphone Q&A sessions allowed attendees to engage directly with experts, encouraging dialogue beyond the formal presentations.
An official event report will be published on the EFSA website before the end of 2025, summarising discussions and key scientific findings. EuChemS’ involvement highlights its commitment to supporting the chemistry community in addressing emerging environmental and health challenges.
