Katowice, Poland hosted the 2024 EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) on 9-14 September. This yearly competition is an initiative of the European Commission, held in a different European city each year. Its goal is to promote science amongst young people aged between 14-20 years. Participants can submit projects in numerous disciplines, and the most successful applicants can present their researches at an in-person “science fair”.

The winner of the EuChemS prize, Janis Bojko recieved this award for his project “Synthesis of new selective-dual inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinases”. His research focuses on the development of “novel biologically active agents inhibiting the CDK4/6 and FLT3-ITD protein complex”. The project has a great potential for impact, as it could contribute to the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), as results showed that the free NH group on the terminal substituent is important for selectivity and anti-tumor activity.

EuChemS donates a special prize for EUCYS since 2014. The previous recipients of this special prize, as well as their projects can be found here.
