EuChemS announces new leadership following its 2025 General Assembly in Poznań, Poland, where members elected the next President-Elect, re-elected the Treasurer, and welcomed three new Executive Board members.
Wolfram Koch was elected President-Elect of EuChemS. His term as President-Elect will begin on 1 January 2026, followed by his presidency starting 1 January 2027 for a three-year mandate. A renowned leader in computational and theoretical chemistry, Professor Koch brings decades of scientific and organisational experience. A long-standing member of the EuChemS Executive Board since 1999, he played a key role in the transition from FECS to EuChemS and strengthened the organisation during his tenure as Executive Director of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) from 2002 to 2024. He currently serves as Treasurer of IUPAC. In Poznań, Professor Koch shared his vision of enhancing EuChemS’ impact, fostering collaboration, and empowering the European chemical community.
The General Assembly also re-elected Hans Peter Lüthi as EuChemS Treasurer for a second term ending in 2028. Former adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich, he has contributed significantly to computational chemistry and scientific computing and previously served as Treasurer of both the Swiss Chemical Society and the EuChemS Division of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry. Since 2017, he has been Director of the Foundation of the Swiss Chemical Society, supporting major national programmes such as the Alfred Werner Excellence Scholarship.
In addition, three new members were elected to join the EuChemS Executive Board as of January 2026:
- Gianluca Maria Farinola, Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Bari Aldo Moro and President of the Italian Chemical Society, known for his work on photo- and electroactive molecules and sustainable functional materials.
- Sonsoles Martín-Santamaría, Scientific Researcher at CSIC and head of the Computational Chemical Biology Group, specialising in molecular modelling related to immunity, infection, and therapeutic innovation.
- Gill Reid, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Southampton and former President of the Royal Society of Chemistry, with extensive academic and leadership experience in the chemical sciences.
EuChemS warmly congratulates the newly elected and re-elected members and looks forward to the leadership and expertise they bring to the organisation’s mission of advancing chemistry in Europe.
