From 29 to 31 May 2025, EuChemS took part in the European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN) General Assembly and Annual Meeting in Bologna, Italy.
Representing EuChemS were President Angela Agostiano and Secretary General Nineta Hrastelj, both of whom contributed actively to the discussions. Their participation reflected EuChemS’ ongoing commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in chemistry education, especially in higher education.
The ECTN Annual Meeting serves as a central platform for dialogue on teaching quality, curriculum development, digital learning tools, and the role of chemistry education in addressing societal challenges. This year’s sessions explored a range of timely topics, from improving STEM educator training to integrating sustainability into course design.
Angela Agostiano officially welcomed participants to the event and presented EuChemS’ mission, activities, and strategic priorities. Highlights included plenary talks by Martyn Poliakoff, University of Nottingham, who delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “Teaching Green Chemistry for a Changing World”, focusing on how chemical education must adapt to meet environmental and societal demands. Margherita Venturi of the University of Bologna offered a compelling session titled “The Periodic Table Women”, highlighting the contributions of women chemists throughout history. The emphasis was on important but entirely overlooked contributions of women which were attributed to their male colleagues.
Alongside plenary lectures, attendees participated in sessions hosted by ECTN Working Groups and Standing Committees, tackling core issues such as accreditation, learning outcomes, and innovative pedagogy.
The event welcomed not only ECTN members but also academics and professionals from related fields who share a passion for improving chemistry teaching. Open, collaborative dialogue was encouraged throughout, reinforcing the value of international cooperation in advancing science education.
As an active ECTN member, EuChemS reaffirmed its dedication to supporting initiatives that enhance the quality and reach of chemistry education across Europe.
