EuChems Division of Chemistry and the Environment at ACS Fall Conference, 2024

Chair of EuChemS Division of Chemistry and Environment (DCE), Roland Kallenborn, and Ivana Ivančev-Tumbas, as the delegate of Serbian Chemical Society at EuChemS DCE, actively participated at ACS Fall Conference 2024 in Denver.

EuChemS DCE delegation attended ACS ENVR Executive meeting and presented the 19th International Conference on Chemistry and the Environment, ICCE2025, that will be hosted by Serbian Chemical Society in Belgrade, June 8-12, 2025. Members of the ACS Division of Chemistry and Environment (ACS ENVR) were traditionally invited to take an active role.

Within the scope of ACS Fall 2024 we organized and presided the one-day Symposium „Chemicals of Emerging Concern (CECs) – Analytical Methods and Environmental Assessments”. Two oral and one poster sessions were organized. Firstly, “Analysis and Fate of CECs in the Environment” offered 12 oral presentations and one panel discussion on Monday, August 19. Within the session, R. Kallenborn presented “State of the art and scientific challenges related to chemicals of emerging concern relevant for water- European perspective”. Panel discussion on analytical challenges and their implications on minimizing emissions was triggered by the talks of Dr. Yuemei Ye, Alyssa Radakovich and Dr.  Gangadhar Andaluri. The other session, “CEC fate in water treatment”, offered 7 presentations. At the very end, Ivana Ivančev-Tumbas presented „Challenges in academic environmental chemistry education” jointly developed with R. Kallenborn and G. Lammel, including the activities of EuChemS DCE related to education in last decade.

The EuChemS DCE Symposium at ACS Fall 2024 was just one amongst the huge number of symposia and other events run in parallel by all the ACS divisions at the great venue of the Colorado Convention Center. Almost 1000 abstracts in near 20 symposia were scheduled only by the ACS ENVR including Dionysios D. Dionysiou Memorial Symposium: Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation in Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment, Oxidation Processes in Water and Wastewater: A Symposium in Honor of Professor Urs von Gunten and Physical and Analytical Chemistry of Tropospheric Multiphase Systems: Experimental and Model Studies: A Symposium in Honor of Prof. Hartmut Herrmann. Attending highly condensed programme at ACS Fall 2024 was inspirational for cultivation of further collaboration of two divisions.
