The European Research Council (ERC) has opened applications for the 2026 Consolidator Grant. The grant is designed for researchers who are developing their independent careers and wish to lead or strengthen their own research teams in Europe. It is also open to those who have recently established an independent team and are looking to consolidate their work.
Eligibility and funding
Researchers of any nationality who have completed their PhD 7 to 12 years ago may apply. Applicants should demonstrate a strong scientific record and submit a high-quality research proposal. The standard funding for a Consolidator Grant can reach €2 million for a period of five years, with amounts adjusted for shorter projects.
Additional funding of up to €1 million can be requested for costs that are essential to the research, such as start-up expenses, major equipment, access to large facilities, or extensive experimental and fieldwork. For Principal Investigators relocating from non-associated third countries to the EU or an Associated Country to take up their grant, this additional funding may be increased to €2 million.
ERC grants cover up to 100% of eligible direct research costs, along with 25% of total eligible costs to contribute to indirect costs.
ERC Leadership
Maria Leptin has been reappointed as President of the ERC for an additional two years, with her new term extending until September 2027. The ERC Vice-Presidents, Professors Gerd Gigerenzer, Eystein Jansen, and Jesper Q. Svejstrup, highlighted that this reappointment provides continuity during a key period ahead of the next EU research and innovation framework programme. They praised her leadership over the past four years and expressed confidence in her guidance of the ERC’s mission for science in Europe.
