ERC appoints new Scientific Council Members and Vice Presidents

The ERC welcomes six new Scientific Council members and three Vice Presidents, effective 1 January 2026, reinforcing its leadership in European research.

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced six new members of its Scientific Council, alongside the election of three new Vice Presidents, effective 1 January 2026. The appointments were made by the European Commission, with one current member’s term also renewed.

The new Council members include Nobel Laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier, geophysicist Michel Campillo, historian Kateřina Králová, social anthropologist Susana Narotzky, behavioral scientist Karin Roelofs, and genomicist Eleftheria Zeggini. They join Giovanni Sartor, whose term has been extended.

Liselotte Højgaard, Torsten Persson, and Nicola Spaldin have been elected Vice Presidents, overseeing life sciences, social sciences and humanities, and physical sciences and engineering, respectively. All three will continue their research activities alongside their new roles.

ERC President Maria Leptin welcomed the appointments, highlighting the Council’s continued commitment to excellence, independence, and European scientific collaboration.
