Science knows no borders

Science beyond political borders – Chemistry, like science in general, knows no national boundaries. EuChemS serves as a platform for collaboration among scientists from different European countries, regardless of political debates about Europe.

As we look ahead to 2025, we cannot forget that the times we are living are marked by  major changes in the geopolitical structure of the world. What can be the role of  EuChemS  in a context where the concept of Europe is heavily debated?

I believe it is useful to emphasise some key points:

Science beyond political borders

Chemistry, like science in general, knows no national boundaries. EuChemS serves as a platform for collaboration among scientists from different European countries, regardless of political debates about Europe. Breakthroughs in chemistry, from new materials to sustainable energy solutions, don’t happen in isolation. EuChemS connects researchers across Europe, ensuring that discoveries are shared, knowledge flows freely, and innovation accelerates. Even in a fragmented political landscape, scientific progress depends on strong international networks.

Strength in Numbers: Tackling Global Challenges Together

Climate change, pollution, and pandemics don’t stop at national borders. By uniting Europe’s best minds, EuChemS helps drive solutions to problems that no single country can solve alone. A divided scientific community weakens our ability to compete globally and protect future generations.

Empowering the Next Generation of Scientists

Through networking opportunities, EuChemS creates pathways for young researchers to thrive. Science needs stability and continuity—political shifts should not disrupt the development of the next generation of researchers. The EuChemS Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) supports young researchers with training, mentorship, and international collaborations, ensuring that the next generation of European chemists remains competitive on the global stage.

Bridging Science and Policy for a Better Future

EuChemS ensures that policymakers have access to the best scientific advice, helping shape smarter regulations on issues like green chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and resource management. Without a strong European inclusive scientific voice,  policies risk being shaped by short-term interests rather than long-term knowledge.

A Legacy of Excellence that must not be lost

European chemistry has led the world for centuries, from Mendeleev’s periodic table to modern-day breakthroughs in nanotechnology and medicine. EuChemS preserves and amplifies this tradition, ensuring that Europe remains a hub of scientific excellence, regardless of political uncertainties. The EuChemS Historical Landmarks Programme recognises sites of great scientific importance, celebrating Europe’s rich scientific heritage and inspiring future generations.

The Bottom Line: Whether or not political structures change, chemistry will continue to transform our world. The question is: do we want Europe to lead that transformation?
