The EYCN has had an incredibly active few months, with events and initiatives that continue to strengthen its role within the European chemistry community. From exciting competitions to educational seminars, EYCN has made great strides in supporting early-career chemists. Here’s a look at some of the recent highlights.
One major event was the Early-Career Program held at the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC9) in Dublin, Ireland. With over 1600 attendees, this international gathering showcased cutting-edge research from around the world. The EYCN’s Early-Career Program featured 12 workshops and discussions, offering participants the chance to build skills beyond the scientific sessions. Topics included CV and grant writing, as well as broader issues like inclusion and ethical challenges in research. EYCN is grateful to all speakers and supporters for making this program a success and now looks forward to the 10th EuChemS Congress in Antwerp, which will also celebrate EYCN’s 20th anniversary.
Another exciting event was the close of submissions for the 2024 edition of EYCN’s Photochimica competition. This year, young chemists were encouraged to capture the beauty of chemistry in photographs under the theme “Elements in Chemistry.” EYCN thanks all participants for their submissions and looks forward to announcing the winners soon.
The latest episode of EYCN’s podcast featured an in-depth discussion with IUPAC president-elect Mary Garson. Hosted by Carl Schneider, the episode explores Garson’s long-standing involvement with IUPAC, highlighting how the organization nurtures the next generation of researchers and its broader mission beyond the well-known chemical nomenclature.
EYCN also released a new episode of Eurospectives, a video series that captures diverse perspectives from scientists across Europe. The latest installment focused on sustainability in science. Researchers from EPFL, the Polish Chemical Society, and the Spanish Chemical Society shared their views on what changes are needed to integrate sustainability into scientific practice.
Lastly, EYCN’s weekly quiz has returned after a brief summer break. Hosted on Instagram, the quiz challenges participants on their knowledge of chemistry and EYCN member states. It’s a fun and interactive way to engage with EYCN, and the team invites everyone to contribute creative questions by reaching out via email!
Hopefully you enjoyed our update! We’re excited to continue sharing EYCN’s progress and look forward to more events and opportunities in 2024.
