The School of Chemistry (the School) is one of the six schools of the Faculty of Sciences in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (the University), which is the largest university in Greece. Since its establishment in 1943, thousands of students have graduated from the School and have become successful chemists and scientists in a wide range of academic and industrial fields, in Greece and abroad.
Last year, the School celebrated its 80th anniversary. This milestone was celebrated in an emblematic international conference that took place between 12 and 15 November 2023 at the University. The conference, organised under the title of the “1st Aristotle Conference on Chemistry: Advances and Challenges in Chemistry”, showcased the state-of-the-art scientific activity and research achievements of the School’s eleven laboratories. Distinguished speakers and faculty members of Greek and international universities, from all chemistry fields, accepted the invitation to join with enthusiasm.
Currently the School consists of 33 Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 13 Assistant Professors, 11 Laboratory Teaching staff members, 5 Technical staff members and 6 Administrative staff members.
The School’s eleven laboratories offer Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees, covering all main chemistry fields: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical and Environmental Technology, Chemistry and Technology of Polymers and Colours, Chemistry Education and Applications of Information and Communication Technologies in Chemistry, Environmental Pollution Control, Food Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Technology, Quantum and Computational Chemistry.
The School’s esteemed place within the University is evidenced by the achievements of its academic staff, who feature in international lists, count a number of scientific publications, participate in national and international conferences, and organise or participate in many national or EU research projects. Twenty eight current and retired faculty members of the School are listed in the top 2% of global research, based on a bibliometric study published in collaboration by Elsevier publishing house and Stanford University.
The School also plays an important role in the city of Thessaloniki, both at an economic and a societal level. Public authorities as well as private enterprises frequently seek the School’s collaboration or help, in a range of relevant areas of interest.
