The 2024 EuChemS General Assembly, held from 23–25 October in Berlin, marked an important moment for the organisation as three new members were elected to its Executive Board. The election took place during the Business Session, chaired by EuChemS President Angela Agostiano. The newly elected members – Tom Kinzel, Renata Oriňaková, and Jeroen Cornelissen- bring a diverse mix of expertise from chemistry, academia, and industry, strengthening EuChemS’s leadership.
Tom Kinzel, Managing Director of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), has a strong background in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. With experience at MIT and Bayer Pharma, Kinzel is focused on advancing collaboration within the chemical community and has outlined a vision to enhance societal relevance, global leadership, and new forms of cooperation.
Renata Oriňaková, Vice-Dean for International Affairs and Research at the Faculty of Science at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Slovakia, specializes in electrochemical production and nanostructured materials. She has led several international research projects and made significant contributions to physical chemistry and electrochemistry. Her academic expertise will offer valuable insights to the Executive Board.
Jeroen Cornelissen, Professor of Biomolecular Nanotechnology at the University of Twente, is renowned for his pioneering work in polymer and supramolecular chemistry. His research in chemical virology, especially in using viruses for nanotechnology, has earned global recognition. Cornelissen’s innovative approach will bring a cutting-edge scientific perspective to EuChemS’s leadership.
In addition to these new appointments, two more key individuals have joined the EuChemS leadership. Francesco Peri has been appointed as the Professional Networks (PNs) representative, while Thomas Vranken will serve as the liaison and local organiser for the upcoming 10th European Chemistry Congress (ECC10).
