Is Europe moving backwards on equality and sustainability? What EuChemS is doing to keep the path forward

Europe has long been a pioneer in gender equality, inclusion, and sustainability. Yet, recent years have shown worrying signs: women’s participation in leadership roles is stagnating, funding for education and diversity programmes is being reduced, and parts of the Green Deal are meeting resistance from those who view the ecological transition as an economic burden rather than an opportunity.

While Europe remains a global reference, a growing divide is emerging among Member States. In some areas, equality and sustainability are perceived as “extras” rather than essential pillars of progress. At the same time, powerful counterforces, citizen movements, young generations, and the scientific community, continue to advocate for a fairer and greener future.

In this complex landscape, the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) has a decisive role to play. Equality, inclusion, and sustainability are not marginal issues for science, they are fundamental conditions for excellence and innovation. EuChemS, as the voice of the chemical sciences in Europe, must act and lead by example.

Advocacy and policy leadership

EuChemS can reinforce its presence in the European policy arena, issuing position statements on gender equality, diversity, and sustainable research practices. By engaging with the European Commission, Parliament and Council, and by participating in consultations, EuChemS ensures that scientific evidence informs decisions that shape our future.

Scientific excellence through inclusion

Evidence shows that diversity fuels creativity and innovation. EuChemS can highlight examples where inclusive and sustainable approaches have strengthened research and competitiveness, demonstrating that social responsibility and scientific success go hand in hand.

Education and scientific culture

Promoting education is key. EuChemS supports training, summer schools, and communication initiatives that connect chemistry with sustainability and equality. These actions foster a scientific culture aware of its ethical and social dimensions, capable of inspiring new generations of chemists.

Leading by example

Within its own structures, EuChemS can ensure gender balance, sustainability guidelines for events, and recognition through awards for outstanding practices in equality and green chemistry.

As scientists, we have the privilege and the duty to look beyond the laboratory. Chemistry is deeply intertwined with the challenges of our time, from clean energy to materials, from environment to health. But these challenges cannot be met without inclusion, diversity, and a shared sense of responsibility. By standing firm on these principles, EuChemS not only strengthens science, it strengthens Europe itself: making it more cohesive, responsible, and forward-looking.
