The 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress was held in Dublin, Ireland, on 7-11 July. During the congress, outstanding representatives of European chemistry gathered – amongst them a number of EuChemS Award recipients, who received their honours.
At the opening ceremony, the EuChemS Gold Medal was presented to Avelino Corma, by EuChemS President Angela Agostiano and Vice President Floris Rutjes. The Gold Medal is given every two years in recognition of the exceptional achievements of one scientist working in the field of Chemistry. Avelino Corma’s extraordinary achievements include, but are not limited to being a founder of the Instituto de Tecnología Química (CSIC-UPV) in Valencia, Spain, and the inventor of more than 180 patents. You can learn more about him by reading our recent interview.
Athina Anastasaki received the 2022 EuChemS Lecture Award from Angela Agostiano, for her major achievements as a junior scientist, and her outsanding research profile on the field of polymer chemistry, which led to her receiving an European Research Council grant, as well as for her excellent teaching skills amongst other qualities. In her EuChemS Magazine Plus interview, she tells more about herself to our readers,
Two EuChemS Awards for Service were also presented during the congress, recognising outstanding commitment with regard to fostering Chemistry in Europe and the goals of EuChemS. Angela Agostiano presented Hartmut Frank, founding member of the EuChemS Working Party on Ethics in Chemistry with the Award on 9 July, during a workshop organised by the working party. Later, during the closing ceremony, Robert Parker received an Award For Service from Floris Rutjes for his many contributions including his delivery of ECC7 in Liverpool and his efforts on the field of Inclusion and Diversity in chemistry.
Last, but certainly not least, the excellent young chemists who won the silver and gold medals of the EuChemS Young Chemists’ Award were announced at the ECC9 closing ceremony. All 12 finalists, from whom the Jury selected the medallists, were presented at a session organised by the EuChemS Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) on 10 July. In the PhD category, the silver medal was received by Sara Ferrara, and the gold medal was presented to Marie Perrin. In the Early Career Researcher category, Michael Howlett is the silver medallist, and Gianluigi Albano received the Gold Medal. The honours were presented by Gianluca Farinola, Chair of the European Award Committee for the EuChemS Young Chemists’ Award (EYCAC) , Floris Rutjes and Maximilian Menche, former EYCN President.
EuChemS would like to wholeheartedly congratulate to all awardees – it is thrilling to see such exceptional achievements rewarded.
